Did you know you can use hypnosis for allergy relief?

If you are surprised, you are not alone.

Hypnosis is one of the most effective ways to relieve allergies

In order to understand how hypnosis can help manage or even cure allergies, it is important to know what is an allergy and why one has an allergic response.

What is an allergy?

[easy-tweet tweet=”An allergy is how your body responds to a substance when it thinks the immune system is under attack.” user=”icharsonline” hashtags=”Allergy, AllergyTreatment, ImmuneSystem” template=”light”]

A more technical definition of allergy can be found on WebMD

The job of the body’s immune system is to keep you healthy by fighting off infections and other dangers. An allergy reaction occurs when your immune system overreacts to a substance (allergen), perceiving it as dangerous and triggering a protective response.

The protective response includes producing antibodies, which usually results in symptoms such as:

  • Sneezing
  • Itching
  • Runny nose or stuffy nose
  • Hives
  • Swelling
  • Vomiting
  • Diarrhea
  • Breathing difficulties

Allergic reactions are medically treated with anti-histamines (to neutralize the histamines) and steroids (to reduce swelling and redness). But the same is generally not true for the allergy itself.

This is where hypnosis and different hypnotic processes can play a very important role.

Using Hypnosis for Allergy treatment

Since Hypnosis is a state of hyper suggestibility, the unconscious is more receptive both to receiving suggestions and to retrieve stored experiences.

A mental health practitioner that is trained in the art and science of hypnotherapy understands that the allergic response is an automatic response controlled by the unconscious as it perceives the substance (allergen) as dangerous to the immune system.

Because of this understanding, in order to effectively use Hypnosis for Allergy, the practitioner (hypnotherapist) will first begin by helping the client explore the purpose or the positive intention that allergy is trying to serve.

[easy-tweet tweet=”The hypnotherapist will also help identify the reasons behind why the unconscious perceives the substance (allergen) as dangerous.” user=”icharsonline” hashtags=”Hypnosis, Allergy, MedicalHypnosis” template=”light”]

The perception of danger may be a result of some past experience. For example, a child who observes the mother’s reaction to a bee sting can develop an allergy based on that experience. What’s more fascinating is, if the bee was in a garden, the child may have associated the parent’s reaction with not just the bee but also flowers or grass and develop allergies to flowers or even perfumes.

The next step will be to change that perception with the help of a hypnotic processes like suggestions or inner child work or through regression therapy or metaphors.

Next the hypnotherapist will use the hypnotic version of systematic desensitization to ensure that the client is no longer having the allergic response to the substance (ex-allergen).

Once it has been tested during the Hypnotic desensitization process that there is no allergic response to the substance, the client will be exposed to the ex-allergen to completely test that the allergy is cured.

While behavioural therapists use systematic desensitization to work with allergies, it can take a lot of time to achieve any relief, if at all. It can also prove dangerous since the person is exposed to the allergen, even though in minimal quantities.

On of the biggest advantage of relieving allergies with hypnosis is that the client does not need to be exposed to the allergen till it has been tested in a hypnotic state successfully that the client is free from allergy.

Integrating other techniques with Hypnosis for Allergy treatment

While techniques covered  in standard hypnotherapy programs are good for allergy treatment but integrating Hypnosis with other techniques like NLP, behavioural therapy and using an eclectic approach is a lot more effective and comprehensive.

If you are a therapist or psychologist and would like to learn more about integrating these techniques and mastering these skills, check out our Internationally accredited, integrated program titled “Cognitive Hypnotic Psychotherapy™”.
